Search the Web

You can probably tell that I'm relatively new to the net. But I've done a lot of exploring and I think that some of the information here might help you get your web pages set up and on-line a little faster. Have you found some great web site building sites that I haven't listed? Please let me know; I'd like to add them here. Web Design is FUN! But don't get frustrated. There's always someone to help. Even ME! Just ask and if I don't have an answer, I'll find someone who does. It's a chance to use all that latent creativity you've kept pent up all these years. Make your mark. Let people know that you're out there. Stand on a podium in front of the whole world and let us know what you really think!

STEP ONE: Find a Home
There are lots of great free web hosting services out there as well as services that offer your own domain for minimal charges. I'm mentioning the ones I've tried here. If you don't find one you like here keep looking...you'll find a perfect match.
XOOM offers a whooping 11M of space free but their site development tools are limited at this time and unless you have developed you site using their page editor, all changes must be done off-line and then imported using FTP.
AT&T offers home pages to their members (those who use their access service) for free. There is a charge for non-members. They have a good page builder utility with templates from extremely simple pages to resume and business templates. I like the graphics they offer but they are limited. Extremely easy to upload your files using FTP and they have an on-line editor for your pages no matter how they were created. But, the best part is their add-on utilities. You can add counters, guestbooks, surveys, newsletters and so on. These add-ons look great and work great. AND, AT&T hasn't gone down yet that I've noticed.
Now Geocities offers slick web page building utilities. They offer a program by Intel and your pages will look professional. FTP is easy and you can maintain your site on-line. I would definitely recommend Geocities to a novice.
ZyWeb offers free home page hosting and a page builder with cool effects. Besides their ZyWeb Lite which is free, they also offer ZyWeb Home and ZyWeb Business packages. The fees are reasonable and it is only with one of these packages that you can realize the full potential of their page making software. You still get free hosting with either of these packages. Web page design services are offered if you're too bewildered to DO IT YOURSELF! If you're interested there is lots more information HERE!
When you're ready for your own domain name look at the Virtualis Systems offerings. When I'm ready to make the plunge, this is the hosting service I'll use.
Virtualis offers complete web hosting services; 24/7 customer service support; no contracts to sign (you pay on a month to month basis); T3 lines and BGP peering; a complete library of scripts for their customers to use; five different packages to choose from from a mini 15M virtual server all the way up to custom designed dedicated servers; and you can upgrade at any time at no additional charge. Virtualis is not going to be your least expensive option, but it will be the most reliable and if you're up to the point where you're running a business on the web...that's what is most important.
These are not the only homes on the web. These are the ones that I've personally had good experiences with. With many of the others I've had my system lock up and even crash while working on pages. One of the services has been unusable for a month and another is routinely unavailable for use. But many if it's free, my motto is, "GIVE IT A TRY!"
